A handyman covers the enormous middle ground between jobs too small for a specialist and jobs beyond a homeowner. Knowing where that ground ends saves both money and trouble.

What a handyman is right for

Anything small, varied, and not requiring a licensed trade: hanging doors, patching drywall, replacing fixtures and fans on existing circuits, fitting shelving, repairing trim, tiling a small area, adjusting cabinet doors.

The economics are strongest on a punch list. Getting eight small jobs done in a day by one person costs far less than eight separate specialist visits.

Where the line is

Tennessee licenses electrical, plumbing, mechanical and general contracting above certain thresholds. New circuits, panel work, gas lines, moving drains and structural alterations belong to licensed trades.

Anything requiring a permit generally requires the appropriate licence, which is a useful practical test.

  • Handyman: repairs, replacements in place, finishes, assembly
  • Licensed electrician: new circuits, panel work, service changes
  • Licensed plumber: moving drains, gas, water heaters
  • HVAC contractor: refrigerant, equipment replacement
  • Roofer: anything that penetrates the roof

The threshold question

Tennessee requires a contractor licence above a project value threshold, and separate licensing for the specialty trades regardless of value.

Ask what licence they hold and for their insurance certificate. Uninsured work on your property becomes your liability if someone is hurt.

Getting the most from a visit

Batch the work. Write the list, walk it with them at the start, and agree what fits in the time booked.

Have materials on site if they are specific — a particular tile, a chosen fixture — because a supply run is time you are paying for.

FAQ

When to Call a Handyman and When Not To — questions

Does a handyman need a licence in Tennessee?

Tennessee requires a contractor licence above a project value threshold, and separate licensing for electrical, plumbing and mechanical work regardless of value. Small repair work below the threshold and outside those trades generally does not require one, but insurance still matters.

Can a handyman do electrical work?

Replacing a light fixture, switch or receptacle on an existing circuit is commonly within scope. Running new circuits, working in the panel or altering the service is licensed electrical work. If the job needs a permit, it needs a licensed electrician.

How do handymen usually charge?

Either hourly with a minimum, or a flat rate per job. Hourly suits a varied punch list; flat rate suits a single defined task. Ask which applies, what the minimum is, and whether travel and material collection are billed, since those are where estimates commonly drift.
